Digital nomadism is becoming an increasingly popular phenomenon these days. For many people, it is more than just a way of working – it is a way of life that offers freedom, flexibility and the chance to discover new places all over the world. This article will therefore explore whether digital nomadism is more about work or lifestyle.

The number of people worldwide who can be considered digital nomads is estimated at 35 million.

One of the main benefits of digital nomadism is the ability to work from anywhere in the world with internet access. This allows people to move between different destinations whilst continuing to fulfil their work commitments. For many, this is an advantage that allows them to explore new cultures and environments without having to give up their careers.

Digital nomads have control over their time and working environment. They can work when they are at their most productive and organise their day according to their own needs. This flexibility allows them to balance work with their personal lives and creates space for other interests and hobbies.

Despite the benefits that digital nomadism brings, it is a lifestyle that also presents its own challenges. The responsibility for maintaining productivity and a work-life balance lies with each individual nomad. Furthermore, constantly changing environments and remote working can be demanding and require adaptability and problem-solving skills.

Among the most popular destinations for digital nomads are places such as Bali (Indonesia), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Lisbon (Portugal) and Medellín (Colombia). These destinations are popular for their pleasant climate, low cost of living, vibrant digital nomad communities and access to high-quality internet infrastructure. Furthermore, these places offer a rich culture, unique experiences and the chance to meet new people from all over the world.

Accurate statistics on the number of digital nomads from Slovakia or from around the world are not readily available, as digital nomads are not an officially recognised category of workers and their numbers can fluctuate rapidly due to various factors such as economic conditions, trends in digitalisation and mobility, and so on.

However, according to various estimates and surveys, the number of digital nomads worldwide is estimated to range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands. Their numbers are continuing to rise, as many people have decided to switch to remote working or work as freelance consultants, which allows for flexibility in where and how they work. As for the number of digital nomads from Slovakia, this figure is probably lower than in Western countries, but interest in this way of working is growing here too.

Digital nomadism isn’t just about work or lifestyle – it’s a combination of both. For many people, it represents an ideal way of life that offers freedom, flexibility and endless opportunities for exploration. Whether you choose this lifestyle for career reasons or for personal freedom, digital nomadism opens the door to new experiences, adventures and endless possibilities. But it certainly isn’t for everyone.
